All parents worry about their child’s well-being.

When divorce or separation happens, your worry may escalate. You may worry that your child will be upset, unsettled and even confused.

You can keep your child protected from long-term harm by being alert and sensitive to your child’s behaviour, moods, and attitude.

Here are 5 Important Things that you can do to keep your child emotionally safe during the divorce or separation period:

1. Let your child know that the divorce or separation is not their fault.

You would be surprised how often children think that their parents have separated because they did something wrong.

2. Give your child time and space to be sad.

Just as you have experienced grief, so too will your child, this is a natural part of the healing process.

3. Be positive around your child.

Your child needs you to be optimistic and future focused. Talk about the future in exciting and engaging ways.

Tell your child that they will have two homes instead of one and they will have the benefit of having happier parents.

4. Keep them away from drama or conflict.

Children are not capable of dealing with conflict or adult problems. If you are stressed or upset consider speaking to a counsellor or a friend or going for a brisk walk to calm down.

Your child is not your friend, confidante, or emotional support.

5. Don’t make unkind, critical, or nasty comments about the other parent.

You, not your child has divorced the other parent.
